Jana Pochop (that “h” is silent) is a folk/pop
singer-songwriter, content creator, and good idea hound based in Austin, Texas.
Jana grew up in New Mexico and sought out the live music capital of Austin
after getting a history degree. Jana has released two EPs so far and is
launching her 3rd, "Throats Are Quarries", in July 2014.
"Throats Are Quarries" was produced by Daniel Barrett at Rubicon
Recording in Austin, Texas.
The EP starts with the song “When Your Soul
Leaves Your Body” This song prepares you for what Jana Pochop has in store for
this EP. Her voice is very soothing and I love how she layers her vocals to get
a bigger sound. She sticks to the popularized song structure, verse, chorus,
verse which will make this track a popular one I think. The backing track is
very melodic and brings forth a cool relaxing sensation over the mind and body.
The backing beat is nice and it doesn't overwhelm her voice.
The song “Throw You Forward” is an interesting
one because it seems to tell a personal story about an significant other. I
like the anxiety she vocalizes in her lyrics, I think it’s very relatable to
anyone who gets caught off guard or caught by surprise. She expresses it very
well through this song with the melody backed by the acoustic guitar and the
undertone of the backing beat. This track really progresses when the drums get
much heavier then reach a new calamity again. The song is “chill” and relaxing
“Deepest Fear” Is up tempo from the other songs
and has a blues, country feel to it with the banjo being played at an up tempo
pace. I like this song because it has a psychedelic feel to it with the guitar
solo backing the banjo play. Her voice is very calm, but fits the setting of
the song. It’s a good change of pace and shows all of her talents. The lyrics
are relatable because who doesn’t get that feeling of terror and fear either
for the future or past.
Jana Pochop has really done well with her EP Throats
Are Quarries. She’s able to present a finished product that is produced with
great quality. I can tell she put a lot of time into this because the
instrumentals aren’t just “generic” but unique and give something different to
the genre. If you like chill vibing music with a deeper meaning make sure you
check out Jana Pochop.
